Alii, former Palau Peace Corps Volunteers and Staff!
Welcome to the Palau PCV 50th Anniversary Organization Blogsite.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for JULY 3 - 9, 2016
and make plans now to join the
50th Anniversary Celebration
of Peace Corps in Palau!
Did you know that since Micro 1 arrived, back in the summer of 1966, there have been 370 PCV's who served in Palau? I was happy to discover that, in fact, there are 17 other former Peace Corps Volunteers who now reside in Palau. Recently a core group of former PCV's and staff met to form a non-profit organization to plan a celebration of the 50-year presence of Peace Corps in Palau. The Palau PCV 50th Anniversary Organization is now officially chartered by the Government of Palau. According to the by-laws, membership in the Organization is automatic for any person residing in Palau who is a current or former U.S. PCV or member, past or present, of the Peace Corps staff. Board meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and the general membership meets the third Tuesday. Officers of the Organization are:
Judy Dean, President
Lynn Polloi, Vice President
Bill Keldermans, Treasurer
Goretti Masayos, Secretary
We have a lot of ideas to make the 50th Anniversary Celebration a fun time for former PCV's and their families. Check this blog often, as we will be posting updates on our progress, travel tips, event schedules and more.

Greetings all! and I should say Alii,
ReplyDeleteI am Kerry Fitzgibbons; Dawn (my wife) and I served in Micro VI (1967 to 1969). dawn worked as a medical technologist in the hospital in Koror and I worked as an Agricultural Extension Agent at the Ag Station the first year; the second year I was recruited to teach Boy's physical Education at Palau High School. Dawn and i were the House Parents for the PHS Dormitories for most of the two years we were in Palau.
We returned to the US in 1969, pregnant with our first child. I completed a Masters program in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling at Michigan State University. Subsequently, I went to work for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Seattle; I worked for the VA for 28 years and retired in 2000 to continue work as a private therapist. Dawn focused her life energies on raising our four children and supporting other mothers through La Leche League as a leader and lactation consultant. Inspired by serving on Emergency Medical teams overseas (Ethiopia and Iraq), She later (1991-1993), she completed a Master's Degree in Public Health and started a new career. She worked for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Group Health Reseach Institute as a Project Manager for more than 15 years.
In 2011 we returned to Palau for a 10 day holiday and decided to seek employment in Palau and return to live there. Dawn was hired as the Epidemiologist for Public Health; I sought out a local hired position as a Trainer for the Emergency Preparedness Program of Public Health. We were in Palau from January 2012 to January 2015. We returned to Seattle for health and family reasons.
We are interested in the Celebration and are considering attending, but have several professional and personal business to attend that may prevent us from doing so. It is still under consideration.

Hi Gang, I'm coming with my wife and 2 yr. old. Yes, I'm a late bloomer! I was Micro 13 teaching art at PHS. I'll be interested in meeting you Judy, since Harson was my friend in Palau and Hawaii. Bill K: I need a place to stay the 8th-12th, leave early am 11th. Maybe you can get a deal at one of the more expensive hotels for a group and that way we could stay together at a cheaper price. I'll be at Greg's from the 1st-8th. Plan some great adventures for us! Looking forward to seeing you all and meeting new members of our fraternity :) Harvey R. Mechikung
